Axie Infinity Play-to-Earn Model Raises Concerns in Philippines

Axie Infinity in trouble? The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) has turned its focus to cryptocurrency games, issuing a stern warning to Filipino citizens about the potential risks and scams prevalent in the gaming community.

Specifically, the PNP ACG highlighted Axie Infinity, a play-to-earn metaverse game on Ethereum. The game employs a model similar to Pokemon-inspired gaming. Here’s what we know so far.

TL;DR

  • Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group warns citizens about risks and scams in cryptocurrency gaming.
  • Axie Infinity’s play-to-earn model draws concern due to high upfront investment and potential losses.
  • PNP ACG advises cautious approach, highlighting potential hazards in the volatile world of crypto gaming.

Axie Infinity Under Scrutiny By Phillipines Police

The Phillipines police cautioned against the costly play-to-earn model of Axie Infinity. To initiate gameplay, users need to purchase a minimum of three Axie characters. This amounts to a hefty $300 investment before they start earning. In contrast, the PNP ACG underscores that traditional gaming costs an average of $100 per user.

The allure of cryptocurrency gaming comes with its own set of hazards. This is because gamers can easily lose their digital tokens and nonfungible tokens (NFTs). Market volatility, sending tokens to unsupported wallet addresses, and online scammers pose a continuous threat. The PNP ACG’s message echoed a crucial principle in crypto investment – even though the underlying blockchain might be secure, the gaming engine and marketplace may not be.

The advice aligns with general cryptocurrency best practices. It urges users to conduct thorough research before investing, be cautious when dealing with unknown entities, and remain vigilant against phishing attacks.

Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in the Philippines has forged a partnership with the Blockchain Council of the Philippines (BCP). This alliance accelerates Web3 adoption in the region. DICT Director Emmy Lou Versoza-Delfin emphasizes the rise of innovative blockchain startups, successful business solutions, and initiatives aimed at utilizing blockchain for the public good.

As cryptocurrency gaming gains traction, the PNP ACG’s warning highlights the importance of education and vigilance in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of digital assets.
